I truly hated to finish reading this book. The characters and their stories were so vivid – you felt like you were right there with them! You shared in their joys, and dismayed at their sorrows. I will treasure this book always! Bravo Kathryn Stockett!

Everyone recommended this book and series to me. EVERYONE told me that I wouldn’t be able to sleep because I was so engrossed in the book. As a result, I pushed through even though I was bored to tears. In fact, I slept like a log after reading this book because it was sooooo boring.
What is the problem with this book?
1. The author is tooooo wordy. It would literally take her 20 or 30 pages what a regular author could say in 3-5 pages.
2. Everyone in the school thought Bella was soooo beautiful. I just didn’t get it. This girl got like 4 invitations to a dance. If she was all that, surely she wouldn’t have to settle for some creepy vampire who likes to eat bears.
3. We had to be told over and over again that Bella was clumsy. We, the reader, never got to learn of Bella’s so called clumsiness. We had to hear about her tripping, almost being kidnapped or raped, hitting her head in the gym and so forth. Someone that clumsy would have been dead or seriously injured years ago.
4. Edward has been 17 for years, yet the town didn’t notice it. In fact, Edward said he was born in 1901 which would make him about 104 at the time this book was written and Bella is only 16 so clearly Bella and Edward should not be dating.
5. Edward is sooooo hot yet no girl in school has snapped him up or stalked him?
6. EDWARD IS CREEPY–he reads people’s minds and he follows you everywhere you go–in the real world, his azz would have had a restraining order issued against him.
7. Edward treated Bella like she was a possession. In fact, he IS fighting the urge to eat her, but that doesn’t give him the right to be throwing her around. ONe time, he threw her on the sofa and his family thought he was trying to eat her (not the good way) but cannibal like way so they came in (NOT TO SAVE HER), but to get a piece of the action. I definitely wouldn’t want to date someone who wanted to literally eat me like a piece of pork chop.
What did I like about the book?
1. Unlike others,

While relevant for it’s time, I find it to be one of the most over-hyped books ever. To be fair, I think this about all of his writing. So it goes.

If you’ve liked the Guido Brunetti mysteries, you will probably feel that this is one of the best in the series.
What’s it all about? Commissario Guido Brunetti meets an honest public official, and crime follows as those who cheat and admire cheaters seek to remain hidden from honest men.
If that’s all this book represented, it would be but an average mystery. Ms. Donna Leon adds a more intriguing element to the story: Corrupt practices breed more corruption . . . both of the heart and of the pocket book. To make the story more effective, she places Guido and Paola Brunetti in the middle of temptations that he isn’t able to resist.
In Venice, the Ufficio Catasto is in charge of approving building plans and being sure they are faithfully carried out. As in many cities, homeowners try to avoid extra taxes by keeping improvements hidden from the government. Franco Rossi arrives from the Ufficio Catasto to ask Guido if he has the plans for his apartment. Why? The Ufficio Catasto has no record of plans or permits for the apartment.
What does this mean? Guido may have to pay a large fine; he may have to make substantial changes in the apartment; or he may have to demolish the apartment. None of those choices seem attractive. What about using a little influence to avoid the problem? That temptation dangles before the Brunettis throughout the story.
But they are not the only ones who have such challenges — Vice-Questore Patta also has the need for some help with public matters. Guido finds himself placed in the middle of that moral choice as well.
During the course of the story, Guido also learns about other unpleasant parts of the underbelly of Venice “civilization” that lurks beneath the beautiful exterior that the tourists love to admire.
It’s a powerful story that will leave you seeing Venice differently than you have before.
Enjoy!

Don’t have much else to say beyond what previous reviewers have mentioned. This is a great historical fiction book, but it is so much more than that. Hope you read it soon!

I am a college English instructor, and I have taught this book for many semesters now. Not only do my students appreciate that I assign them a contemporary books, but semester after semester, they genuinely enjoy the book – even the students who claim to have never finished a book before. It leads to great discussions in class and well-thought out essays. It’s such a treat when I can find a novel that really inspires me students to read!
